China’s increasing wood imports

China’s Natural Forest Protection Program is to abolish commercial logging of natural forests by 2017. Bans already exist in three key north-eastern provinces and elsewhere.

The ban on logging state-owned forests as of 2017 will also extend to privately owned land by the end of 2017.

China’s own output will be reduced by 50 million cubic meters per year so it will rely on foreign imports.  Consumption of hardwoods is still strong.

Australia features highly as a supplier of that demand.
