AFCA submitted to the 2030 EU Climate Target Initiative in relation to its erroneous regard that forest bioenergy is a renewable energy. We argued logically that emissions are without borders so all nation states must immediately reduce emissions and draw down excess atmospheric carbon to avoid irreversible global warming.
We argued for a cessation of fossil fuel combustion and protection and restoration of natural carbon sinking and storing systems which involves the protection and restoration of biodiversity to ensure the resilience of natural systems to climate change impact.
Because, terrestrially, the system which can draw down most atmospheric CO2 is forests we argue that all primary forests require immediate protection, and those native forests that are degraded require restoration.
We spell out that tree planting i.e. afforestation should occur in tandem with the highest priority, immediate native forest protection globally.
We warn against the perverse use of forest biomass as a false ‘renewable’, pretending that its combustion or processing into fuel is ‘carbon neutral’ because ‘trees regrow’. We argue that emissions resulting from the ‘false’ renewable, forest bioenergy, threaten life on earth.
